- The Square of Labor is one of
the oldest squares in Irkutsk. Before the Revolution it was called
Ivanovskaya and it was almost twice as large as the present day one.
One of its halves adjoined large profit houses of rich merchants and
had a rather respectable view, its second half was formed as early
as late in 1780s as a trade square ‘for those who comes to the
city with different goods’. The houses of merchants are at present
occupied by the central telegraph, Irkutsk regional court, a Palace
of Creative Work by Youth. The trade area of the square is currently
occupied by the state circus, the remaining part of the square has
been transformed several times.
