A crossing of the main Karl
Marx Street and Gagarin Avenue is a historical place of the city. At
the early 20th century these streets were called Bolshaya
and Naberezhnaya. An ensemble of buildings was being formed for the
whole century: from erecting the Sibiryakov Palace at the early 19th
century till installation of the monument to the Emperor Alexander
III, a founder of the Great Siberian Railway, at the early 20th
century. During the 20th century this place of the old
Siberian City has not changed greatly: a residence of the
General-Governor and a Museum of the East Siberian Department of the
Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society, a Maidens Institute have
been preserved; a sculpture of the Emperor Alexander III has been
lost.
