- Before the revolution the present day The
Kirov square was first called Tikhvinsk square, then the square of
Count Speransky and in 1920s-1934 it was called the square of the 3rd
International. It became the main city square, a center of the
social, political and religious life after liquidation of the shop
rows and erection of the Cathedral of Kazan in the late 19th
century. It was the place for ceremonies, marches, military parades
and people’s festivities. In the Soviet period The Kirov square
was the place of May Day and November demonstrations. At present the
city and regional administrations, three higher educational
institutions, a hotel, and a state bank are situated here. The most
beautiful and valuable buildings – the Cathedral of Kazan and the
Church of Tikhvin - were irrevocably lost.
