Zone A
- This is the place where Irkutsk was founded. Here at a high bank
of the Angara River a fortress was erected. 25 years after Irkutsk
was awarded the title of the city. Nowadays Irkutsk is one of the
largest administrative, educational, trade and cultural centers of
Russia. Not all the buildings and premises in the ancient part of the
Siberian city have been preserved till now: there is no fortress
wall, rows of shops (Gostiny Dvor) were burnt, the first stone
building of Irkutsk – a tsarist administrative building – was
disassembled, a Triumphal Arch of Cesarevich (heir to throne in the
tsarist Russia) Nikolai was lost. Honorable age of the city is only
reminded by the Church of the Saviour that is the first stone temple
built within the fortress and by the Epiphany Cathedral built in the
first half of the 18th century in the neighborhood of the
fortress.
